Why did the USA help Australia defend Papua New Guinea?
in WWII the japanese invaded Papua New Guinea and with the help of USA we drove them out but why did they help us?
Australia defended Papua New Guinea, as at the time it was part of Australian territory (since the end of WWI). It was also seen as the last barrier against the Japanese invasion of Australia.
If the Japanese had invaded Australia, it wouldn't have been good for the Aussies, and the Yanks. Once the US started operating against the Japanese in the Pacific, after 1941, Australia served as a huge base for the Yanks. So it was in their best interests to help defend Australia. Plus as mentioned we did have a treaty (not that that means much though), and we did have the same colour skin and lived in a European style of life as they did. Sad but true that these factors did make a difference, and still do.
