Arguably, the two most popular energy drink/shot providers, in today's marketplace; are Monster and 5 Hour Energy. When a side by side comparison is made, some similarities appear; and relevant differences are highlighted.
Notoriety: Monster Energy is marketed and distributed by Hansen Natural Corporation; of Corona, California. Although Monster Energy is not widely advertised in media circles, it receives enormous recognition from its various sponsorship of sporting events; and endorsements from sports people. The prominent list includes; Rob Dyrdek (professional skater), Rupert Davies (professional snow boarder); and Jenson Button (Formula One driver/2009 World Champion).
5 hour energy is manufactured by Living Essentials, and is a proud sponsor of the Rusty Wallace Racing Team and endorsed by celebrities and radio personalities; like Lou Brutus and Sean "Hollywood" Hamilton. It is important to note that celebrity endorsements are only important to those consumer's who rely upon them when making a decision to purchase. The rest of us know that they do not affect product performance or results; and as such they are often ignored or disregarded.
Caffeine Content vs. Daily Serving: The caffeine content present in Monster energy drinks is 10 mg/oz, or 160 mg for a 16 oz can, and daily consumption is limited to 3 cans; for the 16 oz size. 5 hour energy shots are available in a small, portable 2 oz (59 mL) container. This is a little over a third of the size of Monster energy cans. The manufacturers of 5 hour energy, claim that this product "contains about as much caffeine as a cup of premium coffee." Assuming the caffeine content in the subjective cup of coffee was 100 mg, then the recommended daily dosage, of two cans, would include approximately 200 mg of caffeine; in comparison to Monster's 480 mg for 3 cans. Consumers should be aware that consumption of caffeine, over 400 mg, has been known to cause a number of adverse side effects. Furthermore, it is not advised to use this product in conjunction with weight loss pills or supplements; as they also (often) contain caffeine, stimulants or enhancers. Neither energy supplement is recommended for pregnant women, children under 11 years old, or people who are sensitive to stimulants/caffeine.
Size and Ingredients: In terms of the supplement size, a Monster energy drink is a 16 oz can; compared to the portable and re-sealable 2 oz shot, available from 5 hour energy. As well, the additional ingredients found in the Monster drinks, such as carbonated water, are likely to contribute to it's larger size. When contents were compared, the two energy supplements shared three common ingredients: Taurine, Glucuronolactone and Caffeine
Distribution: Monster Energy is presently distributed in North America, and Australia. In late 2009 or early 2010, the company will look to release their energy products; in Germany and other countries. 5 hour energy is available in many gas stations and convenience stores across North America (U.S.A and Canada); and is currently the number one selling energy shot product, in the United States.
Although both energy drink providers intend to provide hours of alertness and focus, there are noticeable differences in suggested serving/container size, caffeine presence and ingredients; some of which may incur adverse side effects or results. Regardless of which product is chosen, consumers should ingest energy supplements responsibly; and in accordance with their current health and the manufacturers' recommendations.
