I have an old Gevalia Thermal carfe coffee maker ...?
the coffee maker has been in storage for about two years, needless to say I need to clean it and make sure it is safe to use , can I use the vinegar and water method, and how do I know if it is safe, its got a glass thermal carafe, and is about 4 years old.
I have used my Gevalia carafe coffee maker for years at my cabin. They use the same water heating element as any coffee maker, so to answer your question, yes you can use the vinegar method.
You could also use CLR and follow the directions for cleaning coffee pots.
