Funny Coffee Table Books

How do I stop an unstoppable cat from going on tables in my house?

My kitten (4 months old) seems obsessed with going on our coffee and kitchen tables. The Kitchen table we put double sided tape on, so its driving him nuts, but we can't do that on the coffee table because we use it too much. We spray him with water, but that doesn't seem to deter him; he seems to know that when we aren't there, he ain't going to get sprayed, and so its not stopping him (and we spray him on his "bum" so that he can't see that we are the ones spraying him as a book advised). We have two different "nasty" cat spray things that are supposed to drive him crazy, but those don't work. He even sat down and rested on a surface we just sprayed less than an hour before. He's driving us us nuts of course. Funny thing is, when you discipline him, he PURRS! Anyway, any advice on the un-trainable kitty?

p.s. Before answering, assume that if its in a book like "Kittens for Dummies" that my wife and I tried or are trying your suggestion. Thanks; we need advanced advice.

It's possible if he doesn't mind you spraying him with water that he actually likes it. What we're doing with our kitten is that every time she attempts to get onto the living room table (the kitchen table is so far protected since the chairs are pushed in as far as possible) we hiss at her and shoo her off. She doesn't try that often, admittedly, but it works even when we're eating off of it. We've been kind of consistant with that, since we don't want her on our tables (apart from the desk and a small table), and the breeder allowed her onto the kitchen table when she was younger for "displaying" purposes. If she doesn't listen when we tell her off concerning some behaviour (biting the cell phone charger cord, gnawing our fingers, chasing curtains, etc) I tend to push her down and hold her against the floor (or whatever surface she's on, like the sofa if she's trying to get onto the table) and tell her off. Then I wait till she's calm again before letting her go. It works fairly well.

Your cat does indeed seem to have a more extreme fascination for tables. Are there any tables where you allow him to be? Are there any tables that you wouldn't mind allowing him to be on? It's /possible/ that it would help him in not being so curious about it.

Some cats dislike lemon and other citrusy scents, and it might work to squeeze some lemon into water and wipe the table with.

Vinegar is also often used as a cat repellant (and cleaning up after "accidents").

But all kittens are different, of course, so these things might or mightn't work on your kitten.

I wish you luck, and hope you get at least one suggestion that will help you.

Correct grammar and proper spelling can be a challenge, and their absence can be a source of gleeful to everyone but the victim of a bad grammar attack. How do you react to sandwich boards, road signs, laminated instructions, and other written missives that are just not exactly what their creator meant? If you’ve ever (gently) judged anyone else for their linguistic failures, if you find yourself guffawing about the frequent confusion between “incontinence” and “inconvenience,” if you’ve ever been tempted to whip out your marker to add in or cross out apostrophes, and if you've refused to answer e-mails in which “your” and “you’re” are used interchangeably, this book is for you...
