Drivethru sensors?
I've kept a part time job at Starbucks for a few years for the benefits and coffee 
. What I would like to know is how our headset system picks up a vehicle's presence. I'm almost guaranteed that it's by scales under the cement, but I'm not sure what they are like, and why (in the cold temperatures that we experience) they aren't affected by the concrete shifting around. But if it's by sound, then why don't the huge tourist buses that drive a few feet away from our drive through lane set it off when they sit there.
That's why I'm almost guaranteed that it's by a digital/electric scale under the concrete.
If you can find a picture of them that would be great.
Basically, if there are scales, then how can they be sensitive when they have a stationary slab of cement above them... how are they mounted, and are they anything like the scales at weigh-in stations. I used to ride with my dad when he needed to haul a load of stone, and they could get within a pound of your gross weight.
Inside the drive thru speaker is a radar wave gun. Its always sending out a pulse. When the pulse is broke, it knows a car is there and then beeps in your ear.
Same reason why say in a McD's drive thru, you are back to back tight. As you creep forward they don't always realize the next has arrived. Or you can hear the feedback from the mic still being on from the car ahead.
If you look at say older Arby's and some other fast food places in the boonies that haven't been updated. You will see the actual radar gun under the main drive thru window as well. Be a circle sticking out of a box w/ a thick grid over it. This is the 2nd sensor to count how long the customer is at the window. Normally you'll hear a odd beep after sitting there for a bit. Believe Rax Roast Beef had this as well as did some Long Johns Silvers.
