I've been trying for hours
A 100.0g sample of nickel is heated to 100.0 oC (Celsius) and is placed in a coffee cup calorimeter containing 150. g of water at 25.0 oC. After the metal cools, the final temperature of the metal and the water is 29.8 oC.
Calculate the specific heat capacity of nickel from these experimental data, assuming that no heat escapes to the surroundings or is transferred to the calorimeter.
Specific heat of water = 4.184 J/g oC
atomic mass Ni = 58.7 g/mol
than the second part of the question asks me to calculate the molar heat capacity of Ni in J / mol oC, again, to 3 significant figure
The 100 g sample of Ni cooled from 100 to 29.8 a drop of 70.2 deg C. All of the heat was transferred to the 150 g of water which went from 25 to 29.8 deg C.
The specific heat capacity of water is 4.184 J/g degC
150gx4.8deg C = 720 g degC
4.184 x 720 = 3012.48 J
sp heat of Ni x 100 g x 70.2 deg = 3012.48 (no heat gained or lost by the system)
sp heat of Ni = 3012.48/(100 x 70.2) = 0.429 J/g deg C
