Bialetti aluminium stove-top coffee pot tarnished in dishwasher - can it be salvaged?

The shiny aluminium finish has gone dull and powdery. I think at best this would make the coffee taste bad and at worst might be dangerous for the consumer! I've tried cleaning it using normal washing-up liquid and a black powdery substance comes off.

Any cleaning product that has bleach (ingredients such as sodium - or - calcium hydrochloride) will oxidize the aluminum. The black / dark gray material is primarily aluminum oxide. Use a milder soap, and gently clean it away. Unfortunately, the high-gloss finish is gone, and can't be restored. You can polish the pot with readily available metal polishes, but I don't think you'll get the look it once had. The pot will oxidize again, though less quickly if you don't use bleach.

As far as I know, it won't hurt you. Think of the aluminum pots and pans many people use - no government recalls or warnings that I know of. If it's the pristine look you want, you'll likely have to buy a new pot. If it's just 'look-OK-but-still-functions' that you want, see cleaning info above.
