hi i was in the north of spain, and had often wondered why the livestock roaming the mountains have bells around there necks, it is to know where they are or is it a distraction for predators, because sometimes they are up extremely high, and nothing is around, so wondered about this

In many areas of the world, free ranging animals are belled to assist their shepherds and caretakers in finding them over long distances, at night, in inclement weather, etc. It is typically the lead animal or animals in a flock that are belled, since the remainder of the herd will be following that individual. The bells do not deter predators and in fact may help them to find the herds in the same way that they help humans.
