Is my coffee table fixable?
We have a coffee table as part of a set from Ashley furniture. It is stained a really dark black color. A bottle of nail polished leaked on the table and removed the stain in a circle, half-dollar sized spot. Is this something that we'll be able to fix, and how do I go about fixing it?
Yes, it can be fixed.
It sounds like the finish was stripped, when you cleaned up the leak.
You would need to clean the blemished area thoroughly, to make sure there is no residue left.
Then a light scuff of the blemish to remove any rough spots, would be needed.
Now the fun part... matching the finish.... If you dont do a lot of finishing, then it is most likely you do not have the tools or supplies needed to match the existing finish. This is as much art, as it is science, and not everyone is capable of matching an existing finish. You could certainly take the table to a furniture repair shop (either an independent, or a furniture store that has a repair shop, and many do).
I would get an exact color match by blending the necessary tints, and apply it with a touch up air gun. Then I'd match the finish coat, to get the 'gloss' to match.
A touch up air gun runs about $30 to $50 dollars, and you need an air compressor to run it.
Ashley furniture might be willing to ship you the correct finish for a small fee....I'd start by contacting the dealership. IF you cannot get an exact match, it may be necessary to strip and refinish the entire top.
